Cool facts about grass

Did you know?

Grass does NOT like dull mower blades.
Dull mower blades tear the grass instead of cutting it clean and crisp. When grass is torn, it browns the tip of the grass and its more vulnerable to get infected. Infections can be the culprit of large spots of random brown or yellow grass in the lawn. Dull blades sometimes don’t even cut the grass, but instead rip it straight out of the ground. This has obvious affects to the overall health of your lawn.
You shouldn’t let your lawn grow too tall before you cut it.
When you cut off more than 1/3 of the length of the grass blade, it causes the grass to go into shock. Grass gets its food by converting the sun’s energy by photosynthesis. When you chop off more than 1/3 you are cutting the grass’s food supply by how much you cut off. I personally wouldn’t like my food to be cut drastically like that, would you?

How would you like to lower your electricity bill and have a beautiful lawn to play on?  Sounds like a win win to me!

The cool sensation of walking barefoot through the grass is very real. Temperatures on lawn surfaces can be 10 to 14 degrees cooler than on concrete or asphalt. Green spaces can play a big role in modifying temperatures and controlling climate.

Through photosynthesis grass absorbs sunlight to produce energy.  Grass plants will take in the Sun’s heat during the day and release it slowly at night, helping to moderate temperatures.

Turf helps cool off surrounding areas through the evapotranspiration process. Lawn areas cool the air as water evaporates from the blades of grass. As much as 50% of the Sun’s heat falling on the turf will be absorbed and eliminated through transpiration.

The front lawns of eight homes can have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning, greatly reducing energy needs and the burning of fossil fuels needed to produce it.  It has been estimated that strategic planting…

Raining in Brisbane

It’s finally starting to rain again in Brisbane. It has been a while since we’ve seen a good watering for our lawns. I don’t know about yours but my lawn has been starved for a good watering for a while now.

Infrequent watering of the lawn is actually really good for your grass. Some people don’t know that when your lawn doesn’t get scheduled frequent watering it actually helps your root system in your entire yard. The grass can’t be lazy when its watered infrequently. It actually has to work a little to get its water. It does this by reaching deeper into the soil with its roots. This causes a healthier plant all around. The roots get thicker and stronger so they can withstand the heat of summer and the traffic from playing in the yard. It also starts to get more green and become thicker to make your lawn look lush and beautiful!

Now would be a great time to dust off the old mower and get it running in tip top shape again! Lawns like to be cut crisp and clean by nice sharp mower blades. If you have dull blades it can tear the grass and cause disease in your lawn. Grass is pretty stressed already from being dormant for the winter months. It needs a little love to boost its growth at the beginning of the season. A little bit of fertiliser and keeping the grass cut regularly goes a long way in a lawn. Giving it what it needs now will help maintain your nice lawn through the heat of the summer months.

If you need a hand with getting your lawn back into shape, you can always call a Professional Lawn Care Service in your local area.

AMAZING Lawn Care Tips!

Lawn care must do: Water infrequently

This will force your grass roots to go deep into the soil. Deeper than most weed roots. As the top few inches of soil becomes bone dry, the weeds and weed seedlings up there die while the grass still enjoys moisture from a little deeper.

Shallow, frequent watering encourages “thatch” (the grass propogates with above-soil runners (like strawberry runners) rather than rhizomes under the soil – there gets to be so many runners that they weave a mat that chokes out water and air). Since the roots are in the top inch or two of soil, a hot day will quickly dry the soil and much of the grass will brown. Weeds and weed seedlings looooove a daily watering. It’s just what they need for a good start.
